The mallard duck is the world's most common, most numerous, and best known duck.  It is the common ancestor from which almost all domestic ducks have derived.  It can be one of the wildest and most wary of ducks, and it is also the most easily tamed.  Almost every city park with a pond has its resident mallards.

The mallard is extremely sociable - the drake mates with just about anything that does not get away.  Hybridization between the mallard and the tame muscovy and the wild black duck is very common.  The offspring of such unions are fertile.  The mallard has also been known to cross with the pintail, baldpate and green-winged teal.
